DNA multigene sequencing of topotypic specimens of the fascioliasis vector Lymnaea diaphana and phylogenetic analysis of the genus Pectinidens (Gastropoda).

Freshwater lymnaeid snails are crucial in defining transmission and epidemiology of fascioliasis. In South America, human endemic areas are related to high altitudes in Andean regions. The species Lymnaea diaphana has, however, been involved in low altitude areas of Chile, Argentina and Peru where human infection also occurs. Complete nuclear ribosomal DNA 18S, internal transcribed spacer (ITS)...

Factors affecting laboratory acclimatization of field collected Lymnaea (Bullastra) cumingiana Pfeiffer (Pulmonata: Lymnaeidae).

Lymnaea (Bullastra) cumingiana, the newly discovered natural second intermediate host of Echinostoma malayanum in the Philippines, is a sensitive and delicate lymnaeid species which requires certain conditions for successful transport from the field and cultivation in the laboratory. Field collected specimens were found to be best transported in styrofoam containers lined with wet filter paper ...

First report of Lymnaea columella Say, 1817 (Pulmonata: Lymnaeidae) naturally infected with Fasciola hepatica (Linnaeus,1758) (Trematoda: Digenea) in Argentina.

We report the first evidence of natural infection of Lymnaea columella with Fasciola hepatica in Argentina. A sample of 601 snails was collected in May 2003 in northeastern Corrientes, a province bounded on the north by Paraguay, on the east by Brazil and on the southeast by Uruguay. Among 500 examined snails, 44 (8.8%) were exclusively infected with F. hepatica. Parasite identification was bas...

Lymnaea cousini Jousseaume, 1887 (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae): first record for Venezuela.

Lymnaea cousini Jousseaume, 1887 was collected in Mucubaji, Merida State, Venezuela, from a permanent pond located at a very high altitude (3760 m). Identification of the collected specimens was made by comparison with the original description of the shell by Jousseaume and the description of the renal organ and reproductive system of topotypic specimens by Paraense.

Lymnaea cousinni (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae) as transmitter of fascioliasis.

In the article entitled “First report of Lymnaea cousini Jousseaume, 1887 naturally infected with Fasciola hepatica (Linnaeus, 1758) (Trematoda: Digenea) in Machachi, Ecuador” recently published by Angel Villavicencio A and Mauricio Carvalho de Vasconcellos in Memorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (vol. 100, issue 7, pages 735-737, November 2005), it is stated that their finding in Ecuador represe...
